MANNAR & CHUNDIKULAM (December 2014)
December 07-11, 2015- Trip was undertaken mainly to see the visiting flamingos - Two flocks around two hundred were seen far away to photograph - in the waters from the causeway- but was lucky enough to see a flock of around twenty one birds closer in the salterns. Stayed two nights at the Four Tees Rest Inn in Mannar and Mr. Lawrence the lodge owner was kind enough to accompany us to birding sites. Food was simple but very tasty specially the crab curry and the rooms were clean. Our quest for the elusive Indian Courser failed but I was satisfied with the other speciality birds of the area we were able to photograph. Stayed at the Nature Park at Chundikulam maintained by the SL Army for two nights. This is a peaceful haven in front of a lake. Impresive new roads made the journey less tiresome. Police and army personnel at the check points were very courteous and helpful. It is really wonderful to know that we can travel up North without fear and enjoy the beauty of that area and all Sri Lankans should pray that we have lasting peace.
